Oklahoma Gazette
Founded in 1979 in Oklahoma City, the Oklahoma Gazette is the state's premier and longest-running alt-weekly, renowned for its fiercely independent journalism and comprehensive local arts coverage. I cut my teeth at the paper as a freelance writer in 2012, previewing local concerts and art exhibitions, before jumping on board full time as its calendar coordinator in 2013. I was later promoted to entertainment editor, managing the publication's visual arts, performing arts, music and film sections. As my first foray into the journalism business, the Gazette is where I acquired many of my most valuable writing and editing skills.
Weary Traveler: Ryan Bingham feature
"Ryan Bingham’s backstory is, like his music, unassuming and rugged — a modern rags-to-riches tale, or Rocky with a little more tumbleweed. Having endured a childhood devoid of parental guidance, financial stability or even, at times, a place to call home, his rise to prominence was nothing if not improbable."
SAM I AM: SAMANTHA CRAIN FEATURE
"They say home is where the heart is. For musicians, however, the grind of touring often can be a blessing — an escape from personal demons or the perils of comfort and complacency. But if you’re anything like Samantha Crain, life on the road is just a desire coming to fruition."
Whip It: Whiplash MOVIE REVIEW
"For a relatively low-budget indie, Whiplash feels titanic. The sheer breadth of anxiety interspersed throughout its fervent performances and thematic undertones makes Chazelle’s film one of the year’s most compelling, discharging as much vitality as bodily fluids on Andrew’s snare."
Metal Man: Larry Pickering feature
"You’re probably familiar with the phrase 'less is more.' Whether you subscribe to this credo is another matter. But Oklahoma City-based designer and sculptor Larry Pickering believes there’s an undeniable truth in simplicity."
